Practorate in Cloud Engineering
Five years of applied research and curriculum work in cloud engineering, at Techniek College Rotterdam (opens in a new window), a vocational college in the Netherlands.
The project
When and with whom
From August 2019 to December 2024, for Techniek College Rotterdam. It was a RIF practorate, funded through the Regional Investment Fund for Dutch vocational education (mbo), in which the college and companies work together on the curriculum.
Role of LeX. Techniek College Rotterdam engaged LeX to carry out the practorate. Guido van Dijk, director of LeX, was the practor. In Dutch vocational education a practor leads applied research and connects it to teaching, comparable to a research chair at a university of applied sciences. This is work of LeX, not only a line in the director’s career.
Result
What it delivered
Applied research on cloud engineering, and a curriculum developed together with industry: an integrated programme with the RDM Innovation Dock (opens in a new window), built on challenges and collaboration in the region. Students work on realistic assignments.
What LeX does with it. Schools often buy technology on the supplier’s word, because nobody in house can assess the technology. Then the platform decides how education is organised. Having led research into cloud infrastructure and worked on a curriculum for it, LeX can discuss what a system really does and what it asks of the school. In a LeX transition engagement, that knowledge sits at the table.
